Red Sox Swept by Yankees in Wild Card Series, Lose Roman Anthony to Injury

Two games, two lopsided losses, and a hurt hand to carry into the offseason — that's how October ended for Boston.

Now listen, sweetheart, pour yourself something warm, because this one's a tough read.

The Yankees took care of business in two tidy nights, per ESPN, and that's the kindest way I can put it. Tuesday it was 9-0, with Schlittler doing a number on our lineup and Ben Rice burying us late with a grand slam that was part of a six-RBI night all his own. Wednesday wasn't any gentler — 9-2, this time with Fried, Bellinger and García all getting in on it, per ESPN. Two games and done, and the Yankees move on to face the Rays in the ALDS. I won't pretend that doesn't sting. It always stings with them.

Here's the part that really has me setting my tea down, though. Roman Anthony hurt his hand and wrist in that Game 1 loss and had to come out early, per ESPN, and by Game 2 the club ruled him out for good — more damage to muscles in that same hand and wrist that had already kept him out close to four months earlier this year. A young man like that, hurting the same spot twice in one season? That's not bad luck, sweetheart, that's a worry. I hope the organization takes its sweet time with him this winter instead of rushing him back for anybody's sake.

And then there's Sonny Gray, our ace, who by ESPN's account was frustrated about getting pulled after Wednesday's loss with only 70 pitches thrown. Now, I understand a manager wanting to protect an arm in October. But if your best pitcher comes off the mound still frustrated he didn't get to keep going, you'd better have a real good reason for the hook. I'm not mad. I'm just saying.

So that's the season, dear. Home before the leaves really even turned. Put the radio on something else for a while — we'll be back.
