Revs Dominate the Numbers, Lose the Match, Fall 3-0 in Utah
New England out-shot and out-possessed Real Salt Lake and still walked away with nothing.
Real Salt Lake 3, New England Revolution 0. Final. And honestly? This one hurts more than a normal 3-0 because of HOW it happened.
RSL scored on their SECOND MINUTE touch of the match. Aiden Hezarkhani found a left-footed shot from a tough angle on the right side and curled it into the top left corner before the Revs even had a chance to breathe. Two minutes in. That's the kind of goal that lives in your head rent-free for the rest of the night.
And here's the thing that's going to make Revs fans want to throw something: New England responded by absolutely dominating the run of play. Sixty-six point six percent possession. Sixteen shots to RSL's nine. Eleven corner kicks to RSL's one. This was a siege. This was the Revs camped in RSL's third for long stretches, working it side to side, sending in cross after cross — 31 of them, with eight finding a teammate.
None of it mattered because only four of those sixteen shots were on target. Four. Against six on target from Real Salt Lake on far fewer attempts. That's the story of this match in one stat line: chances created, chances wasted, chances allowed getting buried.
Carles Gil picked up a yellow card right before the half, and that's the kind of frustration marker you see when a team knows it should be level, or ahead, and isn't. Joshua Wynder got booked in the 61st for a bad foul — Wynder, for what it's worth, also led the Revs in shots with 3, so the guy was heavily involved in this game in more ways than one.
Then Real Salt Lake made it hurt worse. Sergi Solans doubled the lead in the 62nd minute, right footed, through the middle of the box, set up by a through ball from Noel Caliskan. Rafael Cabral picked up a yellow for RSL in the 75th, and five minutes later Solans struck again — left-footed this time, from point-blank range, assisted by Morgan Guilavogui — for his BRACE. Game, set, match. 3-0 and the Revs never really threatened to get one back after that.
Matt Turner made 3 saves in goal for New England. Matt Polster ran the midfield metronome with 84 accurate passes. Mamadou Fofana led the team defensively with 14 defensive interventions. On the RSL side, Philip Quinton was everywhere — 32 accurate passes and a match-high 13 defensive interventions — and Rafael made 4 saves to lock it down at the other end.
This drops New England to 14-4-9 on the season, still sitting on 46 points, while Real Salt Lake moves to 9-5-13 with 32. RSL also leads the season series 3-1-1, so this rivalry has had New England's number more than the table would suggest.
Look — the underlying numbers say this team can still hurt people. Sixty-six percent of the ball on the road is not nothing. But you don't get style points in this league, you get three points or you get none, and tonight it was none. The finishing has to show up. The set piece marking has to show up. Or nights like this keep happening.
